about

Sound Series 2008 is the first in a series of releases featuring the highly talented students of the Monash University’s Jazz Studies program.

This is a culmination of a year’s work which is based on the African American Jazz idiom as a language for learning but also embraces a wide selection of musical styles, which includes world music, Latin, Brazilian, Indian, blues and more. The philosophy of the course is to offer a strong technical and musical foundation to allow the student to develop a personal voice. Students have opportunity to study and perform with renowned guest artists such as Brazilian guitar genius Yamandu Costa, composer Lula Galvao, Mauricio Carrilho, George Garzone (USA), Debasis Chakroborty (India) and from Australia, Kate Ceberano, John Hoffman, James Black and Don Burrows. Performances have been held at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and at jazz clubs in Melbourne such as Bennett’s Lane and Paris Cat. We hope you enjoy this recording by these inspired musicians who are already making a contribution to the Australian Jazz scene.

released July 4, 2009

This recording is the culmination of a years work for 1st and 2nd year students at Monash University. In 2008, the students have performed concerts at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, Paris Cat Jazz Club and various other venues. The philosphy of the course is to offer strong technical and musical foundation. This allows the student to develop a personal 'voice' which is a result of their broad musical education and an awareness of their social and cultural being. The recording and releasing of this CD is an important part of the learning process, industry experience and the documentation of the student's development.

We would like to thank all the students from Jazz and Popular Studies, Ian Whitehurst and Sam Evans for their inspirational work with the ensembles, Tony Gould, Jodie Wood, Atia Cader, Paper Stone Scissors, Andrew Majzner, Larry Vila Pouca, Jazzhead, Andrew Walker, Sheena Lestock-Kay, Hadyn Buxton, Ross Cockle, Sing Sing Recording Studios, all the music staff at Monash University, the fantastic efforts of jazz sessional staff.

Thanks
Robert Burke
